The office of Attorney General is established under Article 59 of the Constitution of the United Republic of Tanzania, 1977

.

According to the Office of the Attorney General (Discharge of Duties) Act, 2005 some of the duties of the Attorney General’s Chambers are to:

  • Perform the functions of public prosecutions in accordance with Constitution and other written laws.
  • Control all criminal persecutions in the country.
  • Draft legislative proposals into Bills for enactment by Parliament.
  • Advise the Government on any matter of a civil nature including contracts, international agreements and treaties.
  • Advise the Government on all matters relating to the Constitution and human right
  • Represent the Government in Courts of law and tribunals in any suit or matter to which the Government is a party or has interest.
  • Advise Government Ministries, Government Departments and other Government institutions and organisations on legislative process.
  • Draft all legislative instruments for enactment by Parliament and drawing Resolutions for ratification by the National Assembly.
  • Advise and find meaning out of Parliamentary enactments.
  • Perform any function as may be necessary for effective discharge of the duties and the exercise of the powers of the Attorney General.
